The Occultist
The Occultist is a first-person adventure game centered on paranormal investigation and exploration. The player assumes the role of Alan Rebels, a paranormal investigator who travels to the isolated island of Godstone to uncover the circumstances surrounding his father's disappearance. The island, abandoned since 1950, was formerly inhabited by a cult associated with occult rituals and experiments, forming the central mystery of the game.
The story unfolds through environmental exploration, dialogue, and collectible documents such as notes and recordings. As Alan investigates Godstone, he uncovers connections between his father and the island’s past, as well as the activities of the cult that once lived there. The narrative progression is tied to discovering clues, interacting with supernatural entities, and accessing new areas of the island. Encounters with ghostly presences provide additional context about past events and the fate of former inhabitants.
Gameplay focuses on exploration, puzzle-solving, and stealth. The player navigates interconnected environments including abandoned buildings, outdoor areas, and themed locations such as orphanages and fairgrounds. Progression requires collecting items, solving environmental puzzles, and using specific abilities to overcome obstacles. Direct combat is not present; instead, hostile entities must be avoided or evaded using stealth mechanics such as hiding and movement timing.
A central gameplay mechanic is the use of a mystical pendulum, a transparent crystal set into a bird skull, which grants multiple abilities that expand over time. Initially, it allows the detection of hidden clues and traces of past events. As the game progresses, additional functions are unlocked, including the ability to rewind time for specific objects, summoning a controllable raven spirit to scout ahead or collect items in areas that cannot be reached otherwise, the ability to command rats, and manipulate other elements of the environment. These abilities are integrated into puzzle design and traversal.
The game includes a small number of scripted encounters that differ from standard exploration, including chase sequences, environmental interactions, and limited boss-style scenarios. Progression is linear, with new abilities and narrative elements introduced at specific points in the story.
